The P.E.A (Personal Exercises Assistant)

The main idea behind this project is to assist physical educators with their athletes training. With three accessories: a belt, a wrist wrap and an ankle wrap; the professional is able to follow the athletes progress through a device (a kind of tablet) that will be portable.

Project diagram

    The accessories devices will contain the following resources:

  • An accelerometer that will send its x, y, and z coordinates through a wireless connection;
  • A battery as a power supply;
  • A LED (Light-Emitting Diode) to show ON/OFF status;
  • A vibration device indicating to the user that the movement might be wrong;
  • A button with two functionalities: ON/OFF and emergency/help calling;
  • USB connection for battery charging and development debugging;
  • IEEE 802.11 wireless protocol board; and
  • If all the functions listed above are functionals we would add more functions, such as:
  • Body temperature thermometer and¹
  • Heart rate meter.¹

    And the portable computer will be assembled with:

  • Toradex Colibri T20 for data treatments;
  • A screen to display the UI (User Interface);
  • A keyboard and touchpad, both as an input device;
  • A battery as power supply;
  • USB connection for battery charging and On-The-Go specification and
  • The software will have these specifications:
  • ARM Arch Linux or Angstrom Linux; and
  • GTK and C/python applications that will present some informations which will still be decided;

An idea about how the final device will looks like.

Email sent by Toradex team with some questions about this project.

Q: Why do you want to use our product instead of a regular tablet or computer?

A: First of all me and my co-participant believe that using this board will reduce costs, using a regular tablet/computer will deliver to the end user - we are thinking in an user friendly commercial product - resource which may not be used. Second we also want to develop from the beginning. And then with those requirements, the T20 Colibri Board is the perfect choice.

Q: How about use the product in the athlete with the sensors you need connected directly to the module?

A: We thought about that too, but there are some reasons why we will not do that:

  1. The final product will be bigger with all the resources listed above;
  2. All the wires connections might block the exercise movement;
  3. The idea is one professional watching several athletes; and
  4. It is dangerous for the user to monitor himself without the right knowledge.

Q: Can you provide more information about your idea? What kind of information will you monitor?

A: The athlete will use a belt, a wrist wrap and a ankle wrap with the described resources above - depending the exercise he will need to make a combination of them. Each device will send data, and with them the Toradex Colibri T20 Board will treat the following information:

  1. If the movement is too fast or too slow - depending the result that the user is expecting with the exercise;
  2. If he is cheating - doing less or more repetitions/series;
  3. If the breaks between the series is too large or small;
  4. If the movement is right - e.g. if he is doing an exercise that forces the backbone, the device will vibrate and warn him; and
  5. We will make more research and to know what a profession of this area expect of this kind of product.

1. These extras functionalities were ideas given through research with a professional.
